Shelbyville Blockhouse
At one time, the Shelbyville fountain was located in the center of Main Street at 5th, but during the Civil War, a blockhouse stood watch in the same place. The blockhouse served as a small fort that local merchants would flock to when the alarm was sounded, ready to guard the town. There were holes cut on every side, just large enough to aim a rifle through, but still provide protection to the defenders.
In August 1864, “Black Dave” Martin’s band of Confederate guerillas attempted a raid on the Courthouse, to steal the guns that were stored there. His plans were thwarted, leaving three of his gang dead.
